Unsere erste Etappe begann relativ spät am Tag bei Bargrennan, da wir zunächst mit dem Bus aus Dumfries anreisen mussten. Das Tagesziel, die White Laggan Bothy, erreichten wir erst kurz vor der Dämmerung.

Die Strecke führte an zwei Lochs entlang; dem geschichtsträchtigen Loch Trool und dem einsamen Loch Dee.

Nach einer Nacht im Zelt, neben der voll belegten White Laggan Bothy, führte uns der Pfad zunächst am touristisch geprägten Clatteringshaws Loch vorbei.

Da sich zwischendurch leider herausstellte, dass keines der Gasthäuser in Dalry mehr über freie Zimmer verfügte, entschieden wir uns, unser Zelt drei Kilometer vor der Stadt an einem Bach aufzuschlagen.

Nach einem sehr willkommenen zweiten Frühstück auf einem Community-Rastplatz in Dalry, machten wir uns gestärkt wieder auf unseren Weg durch die schottische Wildnis.

Auf diesem Teil der Strecke passierten wir unzählige Gatter und durchquerten endlose Weiden mit Rindern und Schafen.

Da der Scotish Outdoor Access Code empfiehlt, nicht in umzäunten Gebieten zu zelten, gestaltete es sich schwierig, ein passenden Platz zu finden. Selbst als wir augenscheinlich alle Einzäunungen verlassen hatten, war der Boden noch voller Schafdung. Auf die Schotten ist allerdings Verlass; als die freundliche Landbesitzerin vorbeifuhr und ich fragte, ob wir an der Stelle zelten dürften, gab sie ohne zu zögern ihr Einverständnis.

Die vierte Etappe unserer Tour gestaltete sich als die anstrengendste. Der Aufstieg auf den Benbrack Hill zum Striding Arch hatte es wirklich in sich. Umso schöner gestaltete sich oben angekommen die Pause mit einem beeindruckenden Ausblick.

Dieser Teil der Tour erinnerten wir uns leider auch wieder daran, warum wir den SUW auch gerne "Southern Mudland Way" nennen. Wir mussten ein paar Mal anhalten, um die nassen Socken zu wechseln.

Da kam es sehr gelegen, dass am Ende der Etappe die Chalk Memorial Bothy mit ihrem Holzofen auf uns wartete.

Die letzte Etappe dieses Jahr quälte sich von der Chalk Memorial Bothy stetig, aber mühsam, Höhenlinie für Höhenlinie erklimmend, durch ein langgezogenes Tal Richtung der kleinen Stadt Sanquhar, wo wir nach einem langen Abstieg dann gegen Mittag ankamen.

Den Snack im Park und das deftige Abendessen (vegane Burger) vor der Nacht im weichen Hotelbett hatten wir uns redlich verdient.
